Airport Security Guards

Since 9/11 airport security has changed beyond recognition and modern security guards must be highly trained to identify and eliminate threats of all kinds.

At Prime Secure we utilise modern technology and an unrivalled training programme to provide industry leading SIA licensed expert airport security guards nationwide.

What are the duties of airport security guards?

Airport security is a highly pressurised job with airline passengers relying on you to ensure their safety.

Some of the duties conducted by airport security guards include:

Screening Passengers

Airport security guards are responsible for screening passengers and luggage for potentially dangerous objects using x ray machines and a variety of other electronic devices.

A single mistake could have devastating consequences so an aviation security officer must have an extremely well developed attention to detail when conducting security checks.

Screening usually involves looking for weapons such as knives and guns, explosives, and anything else that could be used to hijack a plane or put any member of the general public at risk.

A security guard will examine passengers’ behaviour as they pass, ensuring they are in a fit state to fly and are not acting in a suspicious manner.

Surveillance

It is the responsibility of airport security officers to ensure that appropriate surveillance is being carried out across the entire site.
Security staff working in airports will keep an eye on everything that is happening in the many airport buildings and surrounding grounds.
To do this they will use a combination of mobile patrols, both on foot and using patrol vehicles, CCTV surveillance, and static guarding in key locations such as outside the terminal entrance or beside active airline gates.

Their main responsibility at all times is to identify and deal with any suspicious activity that could endanger a passenger or staff member.
As a leading provider of CCTV systems in the UK, at Prime Secure a big part of our security guard training is utilising video surveillance as effectively as possible, using radios to ensure that should an incident be identified, there will be boots on the ground in the area in a matter of seconds.

Dealing with Inquiries

Despite their main job being ensuring maximum security and dealing with potential threats, airport security is a customer facing role and it is therefore essential that officers are approachable and friendly.

At Prime Secure, all our officers are highly trained to provide excellent customer service without compromising their other security services.

Access Control

Airport security may be placed in charge of ensuring that only authorised personnel are permitted into certain areas.

This could involve checking the IDs of those waiting to board a flight, or just to provide support to other checkpoint personell should a potentially dangerous situation arise.

Communication

All security guards have to be able to quickly get in touch with each other and the emergency services in the event of crucial incidents.
Airport security staff, whilst staff performing these duties, may also need to communicate with other airports both domestically and internationally, as well as the authorities from those nations.

For example, should there be a high alert for terrorists on flights between the UK and America, officers from the UK would need to be in constant communication with their US counterparts and even potentially giving reports to the Government or the transportation security administration at homeland security.

Canine Airport Security Officers

Canine officers are a fantastic addition to a security team in almost any situation, but they are particularly valuable in airport security.
Dogs have an excellent sense of smell, around 30-40 times better than humans, meaning that they are able to detect illicit substances in no time at all.

They are even able to detect the chemical component used to create explosives, making them an invaluable asset in the ongoing fight against terrorism across the world.

Canine units also use their highly attuned nose to assist in the searching of baggage for drugs, gunpowder, and money saving huge amounts of time compared to a manual search, and significantly reducing the chance of an individual entering or leaving the country with illegal items.
Dogs can also be effective active security guards themselves, covering ground much faster than any human and having the ability to detain intruders and provide additional protection in sensitive areas.
